There are models that clean and charge themselves which can be beneficial for those with children or pets. A majority of the top performers in our tests have good ability to overcome obstacles.
1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO
The i3+ EVO and its sibling, the i3 EVO, are identical robots, but they differ in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a good alternative for those who want a a fully automated, hands-off cleaning experience, but want to manually empty the dust bin when it is full.
smart vacuum cleaner do well picking up surface debris off carpets and hard floors, and they're very adept at getting around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ doesn't feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we test. It may be stuck on power cords and socks and have trouble moving between different surfaces, like rug and hardwood.
iRobot suggests cleaning the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other items it might encounter. It's also recommended to keep the bin and filter clean so they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station and automatically emptys the dirt into the docking station’s external dustbin. It then continues cleaning where it left off. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for approximately an hour and a half continuous use, and takes around three hours to fully recharge.
2. iRobot Roomba i7+
The iRobot i7+ is a top model from iRobot’s flagship line and is packed with the most recent features. It's self-charging and self-navigating. the most crucial feature of all -- it comes with an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.
The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names using Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that lets it identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot with voice or via the app.
In our tests, the i7+ was more agile and faster than our top choice, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surface kinds, including carpeting. Its biggest advantage over the eufy, though it self-empties its dust bin which eliminates a major cause of maintenance and cuts down on the cost of maintenance.
We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot to begin, stop, or pause cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room and to vacuum a particular area. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. After connecting we were able to use the i7+'s voice commands like "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options to manage i7+ settings and evaluating the performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
In a world filled with vacuums that are cordless and are like minivans and buses, this tiny Dyson model is a sports car. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum in the majority of households however, it can also fit nicely on the table for a coffee or the bookshelf, that you can spin around like the magic wand.
The V10 is powered by a 7-cell, energy-dense lithium-ion battery which produces energy that is not faded for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then lets cleaner air into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpets to trap large crumbs and fine dust. It has three suction modes that can be adapted to the task. It swiftly switches from floor vac to handheld vacuum and back.
This model has a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also offers easy access to 2 attachments and the handheld. This is a significant improvement over earlier Dysons that require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.
The main drawback of the V10 is its short running time. As CR's tests have shown, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are not true. This is an average not an extraordinary time for the battery-powered cordless vacuum. That's still enough run time to clean most of an average-sized house but not long enough to clean every area (though an additional run-through often does the trick). This doesn't mean that this model doesn't have its advantages It's lighter and more agile than older cordless Dysons and its vacuuming efficiency is superior on carpets with a low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694"
One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums the 694 is a basic model that's a good option for those who don't want to invest too much on a robot. It was able to remove the majority of types of debris and sizes in our tests and would often go over the same area multiple times to give an efficient clean. Its flat front design allows it to reach the corners and edges of walls.
Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and guide you through your home. However, it lacks the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, like our top picks, the i3+EVO and J7+ Series. As a result, it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords and furniture that isn't as sturdy, and often is power-depleted before returning to its original location.
The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in all aspects because it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning and is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, incurs lower recurring costs, comes with more advanced automation capabilities and does a better job moving itself. It also has a larger dustbin and is charged faster.
The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most reasons, since it has a better battery life, the ability to change its suction power mode on its own and comes with physical boundary strips, and can be operated by your phone's voice assistant. It also feels better-built and has a stronger motor, and works better on floors that are bare and low-pile carpet, while offering a wider range of automation features.
5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+
Samsung is a household name in the field of home electronics. It's no surprise that they are also among the top producers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is loaded with cutting-edge onboard intelligence technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.
The app provides a range of options for customizing your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior customizations docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.
In our tests during our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and it removed 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). However, it didn't do particularly well at avoiding larger objects, like cords and socks which was a disappointment. It's also a bit more expensive than the other models we've tested which could be a deterrent for some shoppers.
The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that you can access via the app. You can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you check in on your pets or children while you're away. The filter and the dustbin can be cleaned to ensure an easy, quick clean-up. The Jet Bot AI+ also has a clean station that's self-emptying and helps keep the robot's trash bin clean and optimizes suction power for each cleaning.
6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum
Unlike other robotic vacuums, that are made for carpets and hard floors, Black and Decker robots are specifically designed for hard floors. They have a wider cleaning path and an extra-large dust bin that can hold 2X more debris than competitors to keep the area free of debris for the longest period of time. Plus, they include two side sweepers to clean up around edges and in corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also includes AutoSense technology, which senses the presence of dirt or debris on the surface and then automatically adjusts the power level. The vacuum also has an app that allows you to view an interactive map, control functions, and set schedules. You can also monitor the battery's status and then return it to its dock for charging at the touch of one button. The app lets you alter the LED lights on the top of the vacuum so that you can discern where it is focusing or if it has gotten stuck.
The application also allows you to manually steer the robot if needed. For instance my living room rug has a darkly colored border that tends to make it difficult for other robots I've tried. However, the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, without registering it as an incline. The ability to set up a weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
